The Trouble with Bio Diesel

August 2nd, 2011 posted by admin

Being an ecologically minded person who is trying to save the planet is difficult. Attempting to identify the most ecological transport choice is like trying to solve infinity equations. I remember five years ago, everybody thought that running diesel engines on recycled chip fat was going to save the planet. In light of global food shortages this may have been one of the most tragic errors and misconceptions of our time.

Bio diesel alone is not at fault. In our collective quest to find a substance that will fuel an engine, many people genuinely felt that using a renewable resource rather than a fossil fuel was the answer. In the United States, the farmers were lobbying hard for the use of corn based ethanol to be used in fuel. The farmers got what the wanted, but the consequence of the rise in commodity prices that benefits the farmers meant a rise in corn and tortilla prices across Mexico. This is a global food catastrophe.

There are interesting options, like the video showing how to make biodiesel from algae at home. I am not that ambitious myself, so I decided to search locally for hybrid cars uk in order to see if I could get a hybrid that wasn’t made abroad. Hybrid cars, may or may not be the answer. The engine creates its own power to charge electric batteries that can run the car. Mainly hybrids use petrol to operate an auxiliary engine. The main problem with electric cars is that without a petrol engine people have a genuine fear of running out of juice. Perhaps someday, there will be electric charging stations like there are petrol stations. Now, there aren’t any, so this is a real concern. Volvo is launching a plug in diesel hybrid which seems to have all of the bases covered. It could be run on bio diesel, and you can charge the electric motor by plugging it into a socket. It is important not to think that electric cars are the answer. A large percentage of the electricity consumed in the UK is produced in coal fired power plants, with dirty coal imported from abroad. There are many people arguing for nuclear power because of the lack of green house gas emissions, but the waste and hazards are unacceptable. The best answer by far is to develop all weather pedal powered vehicles that have child and load carrying capacity.
