Autopen – A Controversy In America

If an alien were to land in America today, it would presume that America has solved all its problems simply because its politicians are focused on minor issues only. The latest controversy to hit President Obama is whether he should have used the autopen to sign a bill into law.
The process of signing the bill into law happens to be one of the most important functions of the President. It acts as a link between the Executive and the Legislature in the American setup. Well, what is the harm in using an autopen as long as it is not misused?
Insofar as potential of misuse is concerned, that depends on the level of controls established in the government. Was the bill signed into law despite Obama’s refusal? Or did the authority operating the autopen refuse to sign the bill despite being instructed by the President?
It is understandable for American media to focus on the hair transplant operation of a celebrity when they are short of news. However, considering the military action in Libya, withdrawal of troops in Afghanistan and host of domestic problems affecting the country, it is really surprising that people are focusing on such minor issues.
The use of the autopen is one of the worst kept secret in the country. The President receives more than ten thousand letters daily. Is he expected to sign a reply for each and everyone personally? If one uses an autopen for signing letters, what is the harm in signing a bill into a law as long as all parties involved have given their full and free consent to the transaction? It is a storm in a teacup that indicates the narrow minded approach that people take for it comes to politics.
